What to look for
Sound
The first sign of problems other than seeing them in your garden is normally hearing something in your loft; this can be sounds of scurrying around to loud footsteps.
Droppings
These are normally in clusters and very in size from 10-15mm in length and rounder than that of rats and can vary in colour from light brown to nearly black.
Nests
Squirrels will gather the loft insulation into heaps to make nests.
Gnawing
Squirrels gnaw on most things, wood, plastic, pvc etc.

Consequences
Damage from gnawing is the main consequence, they are known for gnawing through electric wiring, water & gas pipes as such sometimes causing fires, floods and explosions. The insurance industry estimate 25% of house fires are caused by rodents.
